Neuro Emotional Technique

Your Body Remembers Everything

Your body reacts to old injuries and losses before your mind catches up. NET finds these stuck stress patterns and releases them so your nervous system stops running programs that no longer serve you.

Using muscle testing, biofeedback directly from your nervous system, we locate exactly where stress patterns are stored in your body. When we find them, we release them. Most sequences take 5-10 minutes. You’ll often feel the shift immediately.

Think about the last time something reminded you of your injury; a sound, a smell, watching someone else compete, stepping back onto the field. Before you could think “I’m okay,” your body was already reacting. Heart racing. Chest tight. Hands gripping. Breathing shallow.

That’s not weakness. That’s not you “being in your head.”That’s your nervous system running a program it created to protect you, one that hasn’t been updated since the moment everything changed.

When you experience a significant stressor, injury, concussion, career loss, identity disruption, your nervous system creates a protective response in real time. Most of the time, your body processes it and returns to baseline. But sometimes, especially when the stressor is overwhelming or repeated, that stress response gets locked in your body.

Not metaphorically locked. Physiologically locked.

The emotional charge of the experience gets stored in specific areas of your body: tightness in your chest, tension in your shoulders, heaviness in your gut, a jaw that won’t unclench. Your nervous system holds it there as a protective measure, ready to fire that same response the moment anything resembles the original threat.

This is why you can understand logically that you’re safe, that your career is over, that the injury healed, and still feel like your body is back in that moment every time something triggers it.

NET uses muscle testing, a form of biofeedback directly from your nervous system, to locate exactly where these patterns are stored and what’s holding them in place.

Here’s what that looks like:

You sit comfortably with one arm extended. We apply gentle pressure to test the muscle’s response. This isn’t a strength test; we’re not measuring how strong you are. We’re reading your nervous system’s congruency.

  • Strong muscle response = Your mind and body are congruent. No stuck pattern here.
  • Weak muscle response = Incongruency. Your nervous system is holding something unresolved.

Think of it like a diagnostic tool. Just as a coach watches your mechanics to find where your movement pattern breaks down, muscle testing lets us find where your nervous system’s pattern breaks down.

When we find a stuck pattern, we work with your body to release it.

We guide you to focus on the physical sensation while we contact specific points on your body connected to the stress response. Your nervous system processes what it couldn’t process before. The pattern releases.

Most NET sequences take 5-10 minutes. You’ll often feel the shift immediately, tension releasing, breathing deepening, a physical sense of something letting go.

NET is not traditional psychotherapy. It doesn’t require you to talk extensively about your experiences. It doesn’t ask you to analyze your childhood or understand the root cause of every reaction.

It works directly with your body’s stress response system.

For athletes who’ve tried talk therapy and felt like it didn’t touch what they were going through, NET often reaches what conversation couldn’t.

We use NET integrated within our athlete-centered therapeutic relationship. The safety and trust of that relationship creates the container for NET to work most effectively. We’re not doing NET “on” you, we’re doing it with you, following what your nervous system reveals.

WHY ATHLETES RESPOND TO NET

Athletes are wired to process through their bodies, not their thoughts

1. It’s efficient
You don’t spend weeks building up to processing something. We find the pattern, work with it directly, and release it. Athletes appreciate that this isn’t open-ended exploration, it’s targeted work with measurable results.

2. You feel the results in your body
This isn’t abstract. When a pattern releases, you feel it physically. As an athlete, you’re wired to trust what your body tells you. NET speaks that language.

3. It doesn’t require extensive talking about trauma
You don’t have to verbally relive every detail of what happened. Your body does the processing. For athletes who’ve been trained to compartmentalize and stay tough, this is often a relief.

4. It addresses what you’ve been trained to ignore
Your entire athletic career, you learned to override body signals. Push through pain. Ignore discomfort. Override fear. NET works with exactly those overridden signals, the ones your body never got to fully process because you were too busy competing.

5. It meets you in your body
You’re a kinesthetic learner. You process through physical experience, not just thought. NET works in the same domain where you’ve always learned best, through your body.

WHAT NET ADDRESSES

Particularly effective for the patterns athletes carry

Performance & Identity

- Fear of re-injury

- Mental blocks returning to competition

- Grief and shame around injury or career loss

- Anger and anxiety that came on after a specific event

Physical & Somatic

- Chronic tension that won't release despite physical treatment

- Headaches and body aches connected to stress

- Restless sleep and inability to fully recover

- Physical symptoms doctors can't fully explain

Nervous System Patterns

- Hypervigilance (can't relax, always scanning for threats)

- Freeze responses (shutting down under pressure)

- Fight responses (explosive anger or reactivity)

- Emotional numbness (can't access feelings)

THE SCIENCE BEHIND NET

NET is a blend of cutting-edge neuroscience and centuries-old Eastern healing wisdom. It draws from:

  • Applied Kinesiology (the muscle testing component)
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (understanding of how emotional stress maps to body systems)
  • Neuroscience (how the nervous system stores and releases stress responses)
  • Psychology (understanding of how unresolved emotional patterns affect behavior and performance)

The research backing it up:

It was once believed that stress and emotional responses only lived in the brain. We now know that’s not true. Your entire body experiences and stores emotional responses: your gut, your heart, your muscles, your connective tissue. When stress becomes “stuck,” it alters your physiology in measurable ways.

NET works with this understanding directly. Rather than trying to change your thoughts ABOUT the experience (talk therapy), we work with your body’s physiological response TO the experience.

The result: Your nervous system updates its programming. The old protective pattern gets replaced with a more accurate read of your current reality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NET the same as physical therapy or chiropractic?

No. While NET uses muscle testing (a tool also used in Applied Kinesiology), we’re not treating structural issues. We’re working with your nervous system’s emotional and stress response patterns. NET is a psychological, physiological and neurological technique, not a structural one.

Not at all. The muscle testing we use is gentle pressure, we’re reading your nervous system’s response, not testing your physical strength.

This varies significantly based on how long patterns have been held and how complex they are. Some patterns release in a single sequence. Others require multiple sessions to fully unwind. We’ll discuss realistic expectations based on what comes up in your first session.

Some people feel dramatic shifts. Others feel subtle changes that become clearer over the following days. Both are valid responses. Your nervous system processes at its own pace. We follow its lead.

NET has a growing body of research supporting its effectiveness, particularly for stress-related conditions. It draws from well-established fields including Applied Kinesiology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and neuroscience. While it’s not as extensively researched as some traditional therapeutic approaches, the clinical results speak for themselves, particularly for populations like athletes where traditional approaches have fallen short.

Yes, NET can be used as a standalone technique. However, at Crossover we typically integrate NET within our full therapeutic approach (The Crossover Method) because we find it’s most effective within the context of a strong therapeutic relationship and combined with movement and IFS work.
